Jason Bachand journeys to India

Jason and Rev. SamuelWhat does it mean to be a Christian in India, a nation of 1.3 billions souls and breathtaking religious diversity? Jason Bachand, his mother Jane Bachand, Professor Daniel Jeyaraj of Andover-Newton and an intrepid group of pastors and students journeyed forth to Tamil Nadu and Kerala, India on January 2-19th to seek answers to this enigmatic question. Living simply and meeting with dozens of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim scholars and clergy, the group learned much about the nature of faith and the challenges of interreligious dialogue. Hearts and minds were opened to new ideas and perspectives as the team met with such scholars as Prof. Felix Wilfred of the University of Madras, Dr. Mohan Larbeer of Tamil Nadu Theological School and Dr. K.G. Pothen of TMAM.

Jason at TELC SchoolIn addition to academic study, the group observed faith in action as Christians in India lived up to their belief that "doctrine divides, service unites." India is a nation of rampart poverty, where 750 million people live on 50 cents a day. In this context, Christians in India have given selflessly and generously to help the poor: founding schools, hospitals, and orphanages that serve others regardless of caste. The group visited dozens of service agencies, among them the T.E.L.C. Girl's School in Trichy, the Essential Drugs factory in Chennai, and the Aragulam Women's Shelter (funded in part by the UCC) in Madurai.
